Chants d'Auvergne (Songs of the Auvergne)

Joseph Canteloube

Netania Davrath / Pierre de la Roche / Unnamed orchestra

early 1960s

Top choice. A classic version. Davrath sounds as if these songs were composed for her, singing with lightness, warmth, and a 'simplicity that really seems perfect for the charm of these works'.

Anna Moffo / Leopold Stokowski / American Symphony Orchestra

1964

A selection of songs, not the complete collection. Moffo has a larger sound but is 'ravishingly phrased, really beautiful and nuanced.' Stokowski's accompaniment is wonderfully flexible. Comes on a priceless disc with Rachmaninoff and Villa-Lobos.
