String Quintet in C major, D. 956

Franz Schubert

String Quintet

Douglas Cummings / Lindsay Quartet

1980s

Gil often turns to the Lindsay Quartet for interpretive drama, and their Schubert is wonderful for that reason. Palpable drama and commitment to the intention and feeling of the work.

Heinrich Schiff / Alban Berg Quartet

early 80s Wonderfully recorded.

A really strong, assertive version from technical wizards. Immaculate detail, beautiful tone, and beautiful phrasing.

Kurt Reher / Hollywood String Quartet

1951 Mono recording.

A really intense, dramatic, and committed version. The Hollywood String Quartet never held back and were so good in the standard romantic repertoire.

Pablo Casals, Paul Tortelier, Isaac Stern / Prades Festival Ensemble

1952 Limited sound.

Gil's 'favorite version of all.' An amazing array of stars. The commitment of the artistry and the heartfelt playing is just really captivating.
