Symphony 'Mathis der Maler'

Paul Hindemith

William Steinberg / Boston Symphony Orchestra

1971

Top choice. 'Fantastic' and 'really, really good' sound quality. An exciting performance with 'depth to the sound,' 'gorgeous chords,' and 'rhythmic vitality' that all come across very strongly.

Paul Hindemith / Berlin Philharmonic

1955 Mono, but 'fairly decent sounding'.

Essential listening. The composer's own recording with the orchestra that premiered the work. It lacks Steinberg's visceral excitement but has 'the authority of the composer,' a clear 'vision,' and 'seriousness of purpose'.
