Don Juan & Til Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche

Richard Strauss

Recordings

Top Choice

George Szell / Cleveland Orchestra

1957 Excellent recording quality.

Top choice for this coupling. Fantastic playing, virtuosity, and clarity. Brings out the charm of Til. Don Juan is exciting, and the quiet central section is gorgeous. Really excellent.

Also Worth Hearing

Herbert von Karajan / Berlin Philharmonic

Early 1970s

Coupled with Also sprach Zarathustra. Fantastic sound, drama, and power. A little heavier than Szell, but the beauty of the playing in Don Juan is fantastic.

Wilhelm Furtwängler / Vienna Philharmonic

1954 Studio recordings, very good mono sound.

Til Eulenspiegel was a piece Furtwängler did better than anybody. His flexibility and spontaneity work great; whimsical, fun, and powerful. Don Juan is also powerful. Very recommendable.

Clemens Krauss / Vienna Philharmonic

1950 Stringy, muddy sound.

Coupled with his Don Quixote. A good Strauss conductor. He brings out the charm of Til and the drama of Don Juan. All elements are there once you get past the sound.
