Top Choice

Mario Rossi / Vienna State Opera Orchestra

1957 Fairly well-recorded stereo, vibrant.

First choice, partly because of the narrator. Playing is very good, with character. But what makes it is Boris Karloff's iconic, deep, authoritative voice. That by itself makes the disc.

Also Worth Hearing

Richard Stamp / Academy of London

late 1980s Very good, clear, clean recording quality.

Excellent choice, especially for the coupling with Carnival of the Animals. Beautiful sounding. Features another commanding narrator, Sir John Gielgud.
