Top Choice
Sir John Barbirolli / Hallé Orchestra
1956 Stereo, not the greatest quality, a bit rough, but good presence.Top recommendation. Barbirolli was a passionate, warm conductor. This has wonderful drama and spirit, and Nimrod is played gorgeously.
Also Worth Hearing
Pierre Monteux / London Symphony Orchestra
1958 Very good Decca sound.Another classic from the same time. Monteux brings wonderful eloquence and humanity. The LSO plays beautifully. Would not want to be without it.
Edward Elgar / Royal Albert Hall Orchestra
1926 Composer's own recording. Dim sound, but fairly clear for 1926.Indispensable, from the horse's mouth. Elgar was a very good conductor of his own music. Surprisingly, a little on the quicker side. Lots of character, spirit, and passion.
