Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 8

Zoltán Kodály

cello

Janos Starker

1950 Mono recording.

Gil's recommendation, from a fellow Hungarian who got the composer's endorsement. This 1950 mono recording has 'a little bit more intensity' than his later, better-sounding RCA version. Wonderful, dramatic, soulful, and intense.

János Starker

around 1970

An accessible alternative in better sound, displaying Starker’s close connection to the work.
