Joseph Haydn

String Quartet

Tátrai Quartet

1964

Gil's top recommendation. An older version, but they have an obvious love for this music. Wonderful phrasing, wonderful spirit, and beautiful playing. Really engaging.

Kodály Quartet

late 80s

The budget way to acquire all the Haydn quartets. They play with wonderful warmth and a wonderful spirit. Excellent interpretations.

Apple Music — Op. 76, Nos. 1–3; the second half of the set is not included. Label: Naxos

Takács Quartet

late 80s

Excellent sound. The Takács play with a little bit more forward momentum and immaculate playing. Not to be missed.

Quatuor Mosaïques

Period instrument recording.

A period version that is 'much more on the faster side.' Really exciting, wonderfully played, and nicely recorded.

Pro Arte Quartet

String Quartets, Op. 76 Nos. 3 “Emperor” and 4 “Sunrise” 1930s

Warm playing with the insight and artistry of an experienced quartet, despite the primitive sound.
